Regional Visa Holders are now eligible for Medicare Card

As per a declaration from the Department of Health, Australia, all the new regional visas holders will be eligible for Medicare benefits under the Health Insurance Act. With this step, all the new Subclass 491 and 494 visa holders became eligible to apply for Medicare.

The 491 visa subclass has replaced the 489 visas and all the applicants under 491 don t have access to Medicare. They are required to pay all their medical expenses. With this new announcement, all the 491 visa holders can now visit a doctor or a hospital for medical treatment and get all or some of their medical expenses covered under the Medicare scheme.

While, in the case of the current 482 visa subclass, all the visa holders along with their family members are eligible for health insurance for their entire visa duration. But, those migrants who come from countries with reciprocal health care programs can only access their Medicare card. With this newly launched 494 regional employer-sponsored visa, all the migrants regardless of their passport country can have access to their Medicare card. This, in turn, saves them thousands of dollars every year that they spend on medical fees and private health insurance.
