David Coleman, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services, and Multicultural Affairs has added another feather to Australia’s immigration strategy by launching the Global Talent - Independent Program.

This new initiative supports highly skilled migrants using a fast-tracked procedure to apply for an Australian permanent residency visa. There will be a designated Home Affairs office so that all those applicants can directly connect for quick guidance throughout the process, and all the applications will be processed on a high priority basis.

This initiates will bring the best talent from around the globe and will create more opportunities for Australians as well by promoting innovation, generating job opportunities and transferring skills.

The seven industrial sectors, which are targeted by this program, include:

  1. AgTech
  2. FinTech
  3. MedTech
  4. Cyber Security
  5. Energy and Mining
  6. Space and Advanced Manufacturing
  7. Quantum Information, Advanced Digital, Data Science and ICT

There is an anticipated salary threshold as well for applicants to be eligible for Australian PR.

Yes, you read it right and currently this income threshold is AUD 148,700 and is subject to be adjusted on an annual basis on 1st July every year.

In a statement, Mr. Coleman said, “With this program, we are targeting the world’s most highly skilled migrants.”

“We want to position Australia at the forefront of major growth trends in the world economy. By enabling local businesses to access the world’s best talent, we will help to grow high growth industries in Australia.

“Over time, the Global Talent program has the potential to have a transformative impact on the Australian economy.”

Moreover, Miss Karen Andrew, Minister for Industry, Science and Technology also said in a statement that, "Global Talent – Independent program will drive growth in the Australian technology industry and will also see local jobs created."

“These high-growth sectors exist in truly global markets. For our domestic tech industry to grow, businesses need to be able to hire skilled Australian workers as well as access the capabilities of specialists from across the world.”

“We can create high-paying local jobs by making Australia a global technology hub and the Global Talent program is a signal to tech companies that we’re open for business.”

It is expected to offer approximately 5,000 places to skilled applicants in the Global Talent - Independent program in the year 2019/20

How you can apply?

To have access to this program, you must have a referral from any of the two mentioned resources:

  • a Global Talent Officer or
  • an individual or organization with a national reputation in the field same as yours

All the highly skilled professionals who are referred to the department will get their ITAs for a Distinguished Talent visa (subclass 858 or 124).
